Do We As Women Have It Backwards?

Laura DeVries

Half of all households are now headed by women. The number of households with women at the top increased by 17% since 1990.

More women are in leadership positions in the workplace as well. Female representation in U.S. government positions and the number of women in business have sharply increased over the last three decades.

While it’s great to see women rising to the top, the natural inclination to put the needs of others ahead of themselves has an effect on women’s health.

Do we, as women, have it backward? If you are in a leadership role as head of the household or boss lady at the office, it’s important that you put yourself first.

Keep reading to learn how to practice self-care so you’re at your best.

Aha Moment

Do you ever find yourself feeling guilty for taking a few minutes for yourself? Because we as women are naturally very compassionate and caring toward others, we often forget to take care of ourselves.

But we can’t take care of others until we take care of ourselves first. In the book Perfectly IM’perfect, there’s a chapter entitled What is Your Aha! Moment?

The author wrote, “What started as this Aha! Moment became the beginning of a journey. Think about that for just a moment: it is the journey that leads to amazing things. The journey continues today, but as it began, I was re-evaluating my life and what I thought was important, and then taking it one step further -I became cognizant enough to change my path.”

As women, we sometimes need that “aha moment” to take a step back and put ourselves first.

Self-Care Ideas

What are some ways that we can indulge ourselves and recharge our batteries so we’re able to take care of our families? Let’s look at some.

  1. Take Email Off Your Phone

If you don’t need to have email on your phone for work purposes, take it off your phone. If you can’t do that, choose a time to turn off email notifications at the same time each night after leaving work.

  1. Learn to Say No

When something doesn’t feel right, either in a personal relationship or with a client, say no. Don’t allow it to keep you up at night.

  1. Self Affirmations

Write and re-write “I am worthy, I am valued, and I am loved” five times a day, every single day, until it’s engrained within you!

  1. Choose One Self-Care Thing to Do Each Day

Do at least one thing you enjoy each day that is good for you. How about a nice bath or a walk outside? Read a good book, write in a journal, or have an at-home spa night with a face or foot mask.

Non-Negotiable Self-Care

Is it hard for you to put yourself first? It’s time to become a woman rising and create a self-care routine. You will feel better, and it will show in how you approach your role at home and at work.
